After three months of closure for critical rehabilitation, Karuma Bridge has officially reopened, easing travel for light vehicles and buses just in time for the Christmas season. The reopening was officiated by State Minister for Works Musa Ecweru on Friday, December 20, 2024.

The move comes as a relief to travelers and businesses relying on this vital link, although heavy trucks will still need to wait until additional repairs are completed.

During Thursday’s parliamentary plenary, Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala confirmed the partial reopening, fulfilling a promise to restore access before Christmas. “Karuma Bridge will be open tomorrow by 6:00 am for light vehicles and buses as we finalize repairs for heavy trucks,” he announced.

This update followed inquiries by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa about the status of repairs. Closed initially in April and again on September 23, 2024, after inspections revealed damage to crucial components like bearings and expansion joints, the bridge’s reopening underscores ongoing efforts to maintain vital infrastructure and ensure road safety during the bustling holiday period.
