The Istanbul derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray ended in a tense 0-0 draw, but the aftermath has been far more dramatic. Galatasaray has accused Fenerbahce’s head coach, José Mourinho, of making racist comments during his post-match press conference.

The club has vowed to take legal action, including filing official complaints with UEFA and FIFA.

The controversy erupted when Mourinho, speaking about the heated exchanges between the two benches, stated that members of Galatasaray’s staff were “jumping like monkeys” in response to an early challenge.

The remarks immediately sparked outrage, with Galatasaray branding them as deeply offensive and unacceptable. The club released a statement condemning Mourinho’s words, calling them “inhumane” and a dangerous escalation of rhetoric.

“These statements have gone beyond immorality—they have become inhumane,” Galatasaray said in an official statement. “We will not allow such language to go unchallenged and will pursue all legal avenues to ensure accountability.” The club also confirmed it would submit formal complaints to both UEFA and FIFA, urging football’s governing bodies to take swift action against Mourinho.

Mourinho, who took charge of Fenerbahce in June 2024, has had a turbulent tenure in Turkish football. Earlier this season, he was fined and suspended for criticizing refereeing standards in the league. Before the derby, he had expressed his relief at having a foreign official oversee the match, suggesting that the usual Turkish referees created a “toxic” environment. His latest remarks, however, have overshadowed any concerns about officiating and placed him at the center of an international controversy.

Despite the gravity of the allegations, neither Mourinho nor Fenerbahce has issued an official response. The silence from the club has only fueled speculation and intensified the pressure on both Mourinho and the Fenerbahce board. Meanwhile, Turkish and international media have widely reported on the situation, with many calling for a thorough investigation by football’s governing bodies.

Galatasaray has also pointed out what they see as hypocrisy in Fenerbahce’s stance. “This is a club that claims to uphold exemplary moral values,” their statement read. “How they respond to the reprehensible conduct of their manager will be a test of their integrity.
