Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were likely dead for 10 days before their bodies were discovered at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, according to investigators. The Oscar-winning actor, known for The French Connection and The Conversation, was 95, while Arakawa, a classical pianist, was 65.

Authorities were alerted to the scene on Wednesday after a maintenance worker called emergency services. A recording of the 911 call, obtained by the BBC, captures the distress of the caller upon finding the bodies. Hackman was discovered in a side room near the kitchen, while Arakawa was found in a bathroom. One of their dogs, a German Shepherd, was also found dead in a bathroom closet near Arakawa.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that Hackman and his wife had been “dead for quite a while,” with Arakawa’s body showing early signs of mummification. Investigators did not find any immediate signs of injury, but due to the circumstances, they deemed the deaths “suspicious enough” to warrant further investigation.

A preliminary test for carbon monoxide poisoning came back negative for both Hackman and Arakawa, ruling out one potential cause. Investigators also found no evidence of a gas leak in the home, and the fire department detected no dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Near Arakawa’s head, a fallen portable heater was found, leading detectives to consider whether she had suffered a sudden collapse.

Inside the bathroom where Arakawa was found, officers discovered a prescription bottle and scattered pills. However, the medications present—used for treating thyroid and blood pressure conditions—were common and did not immediately suggest foul play. An autopsy and toxicology tests have been ordered, though results may take months.

Hackman, found wearing tracksuit bottoms, a long-sleeve shirt, and slippers, had sunglasses and a walking cane nearby. Investigators suspect he may have also suffered a sudden fall, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.

While authorities continue their investigation, the film industry is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated actors. Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, had retired from acting two decades ago but remained a beloved figure in Hollywood.
