The government of Uganda  has reaffirmed its commitment to a clean, transparent, and peaceful by-election in Kawempe North, despite recent clashes between security forces and National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters.

While presenting a statement in Parliament, State Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi, addressed concerns over the arrest of 24 NUP supporters, including Members of Parliament Muwadda Nkunyingi and Derick Nyeko.

“Some of those apprehended are accused of alleged use of military gear, which is a preserve of the security forces,” Gen. Muhoozi explained.

He assured Parliament that the government remains dedicated to ensuring a free and fair electoral process and urged all political actors to operate within legal boundaries to maintain peace and order.

The recent skirmishes have heightened tensions in the run-up to the by-election, with NUP leaders accusing security agencies of intimidation and interference in the democratic process. However, the government insists that law enforcement measures are meant to uphold electoral integrity and public safety.

As the electoral process unfolds, all eyes remain on how authorities handle political activities leading up to the vote, with stakeholders calling for fairness, transparency, and respect for democratic rights.
