President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure following Uganda’s successful bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

During his tour of Bunyoro alongside First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, the president inspected the progress of Hoima Stadium, which is set to be a key venue for the tournament.

In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Museveni noted that the initial plan was to develop Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira for historical reasons. However, Hoima was selected due to its strategic advantage—an airport under construction that will enhance accessibility for teams and fans.

“I would like to congratulate the people of Hoima on these significant infrastructure improvements that will boost the local economy,” Museveni stated, emphasizing that the tournament presents an opportunity for economic growth.

He urged private investors to step in by developing hotels and other essential facilities to accommodate the expected influx of visitors, adding that a strong partnership between the government and the private sector is key to making AFCON 2027 a success.

With preparations in full swing, Uganda is positioning itself to leave a lasting legacy in African football by ensuring world-class facilities for the continental showpiece.
