Four Toddlers Killed in Ggaba Daycare Attack
Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Ggaba in Kampala after a man allegedly gained access to a daycare centre and fatally stabbed four toddlers.
According to the Uganda Police Force, the incident occurred at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program School in Makindye Division. The victims, aged between two and three years, died at the scene.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed that the suspect, identified as Christopher Okello Onyu, is in custody at Kabalagala Police Station as investigations continue to establish the motive.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect had visited the school two days earlier seeking admission for a child and returned on the day of the attack. After reportedly completing the admission process, he entered a classroom and carried out the fatal assault.
Teachers raised an alarm, prompting the suspect to attempt to flee, but he was apprehended by a security guard from a nearby church before being rescued by police from an angry crowd that had attempted to lynch him.
Authorities said about 14 children were present at the centre at the time. The remaining 10 children were safely handed over to their parents, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the city mortuary.
Senior police officials, including Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba and Director of Operations Frank Mwesigwa, visited the scene following the incident.
Police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could aid investigations as the country mourns one of the most disturbing attacks involving young children in recent times.
