Police in Kampala have recovered an AK-47 rifle at the Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, raising fresh security concerns following a suspicious early morning incident.
According to Racheal Kawala, the occurred on April 14, 2026, at am as passengers were boarding a bus bound for Mbarara.
A bus conductor was approached by an unidentified man who requested that his luggage be transported. During routine checks, the conductor asked the passenger to open the bag for inspection—a standard precaution at busy transport hubs.
The conductor then took the initiative to physically inspect the luggage, leading to a shocking discovery.
Authorities were quickly alerted, and officers responded to secure the weapon and begin investigations.
“Police responded swiftly after receiving information from the bus conductor, and upon inspection of the luggage, an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine and no ammunition was recovered,” SP Kawala confirmed.
The suspect fled the scene before he could be apprehended, and police have since launched a manhunt to identify and arrest him.

Whether the suspect is linked to any criminal or terror networks
The incident highlights the importance of vigilance by transport operators and the public, especially at major transit points in the city.
