The Uganda Prisons Service has confirmed that Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Erias Lukwago is being held in the sick bay at Murchison Bay Prison, where prison authorities say he is in stable condition and under medical supervision.
Speaking to the media, Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine said Lukwago was admitted to the prison’s referral unit, a specialized medical wing within Murchison Bay Prison, following a court directive requiring his medical assessment and management.
According to Baine, Lukwago underwent a routine medical examination upon admission to the prison facility, in line with standard procedures applied to all newly admitted inmates.
“He was received and examined by our medical team and is currently being monitored at the prison referral unit,” Baine said, adding that his condition remains stable.
However, prison authorities declined to disclose details of the medical assessments or any findings from the examinations, citing medical ethics and patient confidentiality.
The update comes amid heightened public interest in Lukwago’s welfare following his recent arrest and subsequent remand on charges of misprision of treason. His legal team had earlier raised concerns about his health and cited it among the grounds for seeking bail.
Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure and former Kampala Lord Mayor, was recently charged alongside several other individuals in a case that has attracted significant political attention.
The confirmation by Uganda Prisons Service is likely to reassure supporters and family members who had expressed concern about his health and conditions of detention.
Authorities have maintained that all inmates receive appropriate medical care whenever required, emphasizing that prison health services operate under established professional standards.
Meanwhile, Lukwago’s lawyers continue to pursue legal avenues regarding his detention as the case progresses through the courts.
