Spain are the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a thrilling final, securing their second world title and ending a 16-year wait for football’s biggest prize.

A solitary goal proved enough to separate the two sides in a tightly contested encounter, as La Roja produced a disciplined performance to reclaim the FIFA World Cup for the first time since their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010.

For Argentina, hopes of becoming back-to-back world champions came to an end despite a determined display before a crowd of 82,500 spectators. The final was, however, overshadowed by reports of long queues and delays outside the stadium after glitches affected FIFA’s ticketing systems earlier in the day.

The tournament concluded after weeks of exciting football, memorable performances and dramatic moments, with Spain emerging as the world’s best national team.

In a statement celebrating the victory, FIFA said:

“Spain are World Champions! History has been made! Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final to lift football’s most prestigious trophy. After a thrilling and hard-fought battle, one decisive goal was enough to secure glory for La Roja. Congratulations to Spain on an incredible achievement and a well-deserved World Cup title.”

The victory marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to the crown they won in 2010, while Argentina fall short in their bid to successfully defend the trophy they captured in Qatar four years ago.
