The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has strongly condemned the brutal assault of Spark TV journalist Steven Kibwiika by security operatives in Namere, Kawempe North. The attack occurred while he was covering alleged ballot pre-ticking ahead of tomorrow’s parliamentary by-election.

Kibwiika was rushed to a Kampala health facility, where he remains hospitalized in critical condition. This marks the second time in under two weeks that he has been attacked while on duty, with the first incident occurring on March 4, when Wandegeya police officers allegedly beat him while he was following up on a story.

In an interim statement, UJA denounced the growing attacks on journalists, calling them acts of impunity that must be stopped.

“We have been documenting these violations and will pursue legal action against the perpetrators. Violence against journalists is unacceptable! Journalism is not a crime,” the statement read.

The attack has sparked outrage within the media fraternity and human rights organizations, who demand accountability from authorities. Meanwhile, security officials are yet to respond to the allegations.
