A somber mood has engulfed sections of the opposition following the death of Edith Katende Mufumbiro, wife to Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who serves as a deputy spokesperson.

Edith reportedly passed away in the early hours of the morning after battling cancer, leaving behind a grieving family and colleagues. Her death comes at a time when her husband remains in detention at Luzira Prison, where he has been held over charges described by his supporters as politically motivated.

According to accounts from opposition circles, Mufumbiro had previously sought bail on multiple occasions, citing the need to care for his ailing wife. However, these requests were not granted, a development that has drawn criticism and renewed debate over the handling of such cases within the justice system.

The charges against him stem from alleged involvement in an incident at party headquarters in February 2025, claims his supporters strongly dispute, maintaining he was at Uganda Cancer Institute attending to his wife at the time.

The loss has sparked calls for compassion and reflection, with colleagues expressing hope that the family finds strength during this difficult period while also raising broader concerns about justice, detention, and human rights.
