The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) office in Gulu has announced plans to roll out a mobile national ID registration and collection initiative aimed at improving access for the public.

According to Ismael Semanda, the registration officer at the Gulu branch, the new approach is designed to bring services closer to communities, especially benefiting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the sick who may struggle to travel to the office.

Currently, national identity cards are only issued from the NIRA office, but the upcoming mobile exercise will see officials move into communities to distribute IDs directly. Semanda emphasized that the initiative will make the process more convenient and inclusive.

He called upon residents to cooperate with NIRA teams during the exercise and encouraged the public to turn up in large numbers to collect their cards.

As part of the rollout plan, IDs for city residents will be displayed at public collection points, with Kaunda Grounds identified as a key venue. For those in the wider district, cards will be distributed through various sub-county centers.

Semanda revealed that approximately 80% of renewed national IDs are already available and awaiting pickup by their rightful owners.

Meanwhile, data from the Gulu NIRA office shows that an estimated 500 people visit the office ежедневно to collect their IDs, highlighting the high demand for the service.
