The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has dismissed speculation about her presidential ambitions, describing the claims as “rubbish” and reaffirming her support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his succession plans.

Speaking during the handover of UGX 100 million raised through the purchase of kits in support of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 52nd Birthday Run, Among said she has no intention of contesting for the presidency and will instead retire from elective politics in 2031.

“By the time I leave elective politics, I will have overachieved,” Among said, expressing confidence in her contribution to national leadership.

The funds handed over are part of a charity initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children across Uganda, with the event drawing participation from leaders and supporters within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Among’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate over her political future and discussions around proposals to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years.

A senior figure within the NRM, she emphasized her commitment to backing President Museveni’s endorsed successor, distancing herself from any suggestion of building a parallel political base.

Her statement appears aimed at calming speculation within political circles while reinforcing party unity ahead of future transitions.
