Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the murder of Nyeko Christopher, a laboratory technician at the health department of Gulu University.
Nyeko was reportedly attacked and killed on May 22 in Forest Cell, Pece Prisons Ward, Laroo-Pece Division, after allegedly encountering suspected criminal gangs near St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gulu City.
According to Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong, investigators are continuing to analyze CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
Mudong said police have received external support in intelligence gathering and forensic analysis, which has provided investigators with important leads.
“We are still reviewing camera footage and examining all available evidence. The support we have received is giving us useful clues that we believe will lead to the arrest of the suspects,” he said.
He appealed to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased to remain calm as investigations progress, assuring them that law enforcement agencies are committed to ensuring justice is served.
Police also revealed that recent investigations indicate some criminal activities in the region are being carried out by organized gangs with elements of counter-intelligence, enabling them to monitor police patrols, deployments, and security operations.
Mudong noted that such tactics have complicated efforts to track down suspects, but emphasized that security agencies are adapting their strategies to counter the evolving methods used by criminal groups.
The murder of Nyeko has sparked concern among residents and members of the university community, with many calling for enhanced security measures and a swift conclusion to the investigation.
As investigations continue, police say they remain confident that the forensic and intelligence leads gathered so far will help identify and apprehend those behind the killing.
Authorities have urged members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any relevant details through established police channels.
