President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in strengthening research, innovation and scientific capacity to combat viral diseases.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during celebrations marking 90 years of UVRI, the President described the institute as a cornerstone of Uganda’s public health system and a key institution in the country’s response to infectious diseases.

Museveni said continued investment in scientific research is essential to improving disease surveillance, prevention and response, noting that UVRI has played a critical role in protecting the health of Ugandans over the decades.

The President also welcomed the launch of the Regional Polio Laboratory at UVRI, expressing confidence that the facility will strengthen efforts to eliminate polio in Uganda and the wider region through improved disease surveillance, testing and research.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the institute’s work, saying investment in research and innovation remains vital to safeguarding public health and enhancing Uganda’s capacity to respond to emerging health threats.
