Trump Criticises NBC Reporter During White House Exchange

U.S. President Donald Trump drew criticism after a tense exchange with NBC News correspondent Yamiche Alcindor during a White House press briefing in September 2025.

The confrontation began when Alcindor questioned whether a social media post titled “Chipocalypse Now,” which featured military imagery and references to a “Department of WAR,” suggested the administration was preparing to wage a campaign against the city of Chicago.

Responding to the question, Trump rejected the premise, telling the reporter that her characterization was “fake news” and insisting his administration’s focus was on tackling crime and improving public safety rather than “going to war” with the city.

As Alcindor attempted to ask a follow-up question, the exchange became heated. Trump interrupted her, telling her to “be quiet” before describing her as “second-rate.”

The incident attracted widespread attention, with media analysts noting that it echoed previous confrontations between Trump and journalists during press briefings.

Journalism organisations and civil rights groups, including the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), defended Alcindor, arguing that reporters should be able to ask questions without being subjected to personal attacks.

The White House has maintained that the President was responding to what he viewed as a misleading question, while critics said the remarks undermined respectful engagement between public officials and the press.

The exchange has renewed debate over relations between political leaders and the media, as well as the treatment of journalists during official press engagements.
