President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has said he has never tortured or ordered the torture of any political opponent throughout his 56 years of political and military involvement.

The President described torture as immoral, contrary to revolutionary principles and an ineffective way of resolving political disagreements.

Speaking while defending his record on human rights and leadership, Museveni maintained that political opponents should be handled through lawful and democratic processes rather than violence.

“I have never tortured anyone or ordered the torture of any political opponent in my 56 years of struggle,” the President said.

Museveni argued that torture is both morally wrong and counterproductive, insisting that it cannot provide lasting solutions to political differences.

He said disagreements should instead be addressed through dialogue, legal mechanisms and the established institutions of the state.

The remarks come amid continued public debate and criticism from sections of the opposition and human rights organisations over allegations of torture and mistreatment by security agencies. Government has consistently maintained that torture is illegal and that any officers found culpable should be held individually accountable in accordance with the law.

The President reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights while maintaining peace and security in the country.
