Tensions in Kampala reached a boiling point today when anti-corruption activists took to the streets in a highly anticipated march towards Parliament. While the city’s business operations remained largely undisturbed, protesters armed with placards set out on their journey to the August House, calling for sweeping governmental changes.
The initially peaceful demonstration turned confrontational as military and police forces intervened, resulting in the arrest of numerous demonstrators, including notable figures such as former Rubaga South MP contestant Habib Buwembo and comedian Samuel Okanya, known as Sammy.
The city’s security personnel, heavily deployed in anticipation of the protests, faced a busy day patrolling streets, engaging with demonstrators, and making arrests. This crackdown followed prior warnings from the police, who emphasized their commitment to maintaining order.
Authorities argued that while the right to assemble is recognized, it is not absolute and must be regulated to ensure public peace.
“Our disagreement lies in the planning and execution of these protests,” stated police spokesperson Rusoke. “Allowing occupation of every street in Kampala is reckless and undermines public safety.”
The day’s events have sparked a nationwide conversation about the balance between the right to protest and the need for public order, raising questions about the future of civic engagement in Uganda.
