Polling in the Kawempe North by-election  officially commenced today, Thursday, March 13, 2025, with the Electoral Commission confirming the timely delivery of all materials to the 197 polling stations.

This marks a departure from previous elections, where delays were reported in opposition strongholds.

The by-election follows the death of former area MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, leaving the seat vacant. Ten candidates are vying to replace him, with the constituency witnessing high political interest.

Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi assured the public that all polling materials arrived on time, and officials were set to begin voting at 7 a.m. as required by law. “All polling materials have been delivered at each of the 197 polling stations in Kawempe North. The staff handling the election are ready to commence polling,” he stated.

According to electoral laws, voting at any polling station can only begin if at least 10 registered voters and a police constable are present.

The Kawempe North by-election is being closely monitored, with past concerns about election irregularities, including delayed materials in opposition-leaning areas. Security has been heightened to ensure a smooth voting process.

The polls will close at 4 p.m., after which vote counting and tallying will begin to determine the next Member of Parliament for Kawempe North.
