A Palestinian filmmaker who recently won an Oscar has been detained by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank following an outbreak of violence involving Israeli settlers and Palestinian civilians.

Activists say Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the award-winning documentary No Other Land, was beaten and taken by Israeli soldiers while inside an ambulance.

The incident took place on Monday in the village of Susya, where settlers allegedly surrounded Ballal’s home during an attack. According to five Jewish American activists who witnessed the events, about a dozen masked settlers stormed the area at around 18:00 local time (16:00 GMT), attacking residents and damaging property.

Co-director Yuval Abraham, an Israeli filmmaker who worked alongside Ballal on No Other Land, confirmed that several people were injured in the attack. He also stated that Ballal was detained by Israeli soldiers under unclear circumstances.

The activists, who had gone to Susya to document the violence, said settlers smashed their car windows and assaulted them with sticks. They claimed they pleaded with Israeli soldiers to intervene, but the army only acted after the situation escalated.

The Israeli military confirmed that its soldiers and police forces arrived at the scene to disperse the confrontation. However, it said that both Palestinians and Israelis were detained on suspicion of throwing rocks at security forces.

“In response, the forces apprehended three Palestinians suspected of hurling rocks at them, as well as an Israeli civilian involved in the violent confrontation,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. They also reported that an Israeli citizen was injured and taken for medical treatment.

Ballal’s detention comes just weeks after he and his co-directors won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. No Other Land focuses on the struggle over Masafer Yatta, a Palestinian community facing forced evictions due to Israeli settlement expansion.

The occupied West Bank has seen a surge in settler violence since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. Palestinian villages have frequently come under attack, with reports of homes being burned, residents assaulted, and farmland destroyed.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and its settlements in the territory are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this. Over the past five decades, settlement expansion has intensified, fueling tensions between settlers and Palestinians.

Ballal’s arrest is likely to draw international criticism, particularly from human rights groups and advocates for Palestinian rights. His film, which sheds light on the daily struggles of Palestinian communities, has already sparked global discussions about Israel’s occupation policies.

As of now, there has been no official response from Ballal’s legal representatives or his co-directors regarding his whereabouts or condition following his detention.
