The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has held a strategic meeting with residents and community elders in Mubarak to strengthen cooperation on security, infrastructure, and community development.

The engagement, led by Battle Group 44 Commander Colonel Owiny Akena, brought together the Somali National Army (SNA), local leaders, and civilians, creating a platform for dialogue on sustaining peace in the region.

Col. Owiny emphasized that lasting peace in areas like Mubarak and Darusalam cannot be achieved by military efforts alone, but requires active involvement from the community.

“Lasting peace cannot be achieved by the military alone. It requires the full support and cooperation of the community, especially in guiding the youth towards positive and productive activities,” he said.

On infrastructure, he revealed ongoing efforts to improve living conditions, including unblocking key canals and progressing work on the road to Awdhegle after earlier setbacks.

SNA Commander Sayidinur Ali commended the UPDF for its role in stabilizing the area, noting that their presence has restored confidence among residents.

“We commend the UPDF for their commitment and sacrifice in ensuring security in Mubarak. Their presence has brought stability and renewed hope among the people,” he said.

Community elders also praised the UPDF for liberating the area and supporting humanitarian efforts such as aid distribution and medical outreach, while calling for continued assistance to vulnerable groups.

The meeting, attended by senior and junior officers from both UPDF and SNA, highlighted the growing partnership between security forces and local communities as a key pillar in sustaining peace and development in Somalia.
