The United States and Russia are expected to release a joint statement following high-level talks on Ukraine in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The discussions, which took place on Monday, primarily focused on reviving a 2022 grain export deal and addressing security concerns in the Black Sea.

A White House official described the talks as “going extremely well,” with a “positive announcement” expected soon. Meanwhile, Russian state media quoted a negotiator calling the discussions “useful,” suggesting that progress was made.

One of the key topics on the agenda was the Black Sea grain deal, which previously allowed Ukraine to export its agricultural products despite the ongoing war. In return, Russia is reportedly seeking relief from certain Western sanctions, a condition that remains contentious among Ukraine’s allies.

Despite the diplomatic efforts, fighting on the ground has continued. On Monday, a Russian missile strike hit the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, injuring at least 88 people, including 14 children. The attack damaged residential buildings and a school, underscoring the urgency of securing a ceasefire agreement.

The United States and Ukraine are set to hold further discussions today in Riyadh to review the outcomes of the U.S.-Russia talks. Ukrainian officials are expected to push for stronger security guarantees and additional Western military support.

Russia has occupied parts of Ukraine since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022. While peace talks have taken place at various stages, no lasting agreement has been reached. Moscow insists on Ukraine’s neutrality and territorial concessions, demands Kyiv continues to reject.

The war has also had significant economic repercussions. The blockade of Ukrainian ports has disrupted global food supply chains, particularly affecting countries in Africa and the Middle East. Reopening grain exports is seen as a crucial step in stabilizing global markets.

However, European allies remain skeptical about Russia’s intentions. Some officials fear that any easing of sanctions in exchange for a grain deal could embolden Moscow without leading to meaningful de-escalation in Ukraine.

The negotiations in Riyadh mark a rare moment of direct engagement between U.S. and Russian officials on Ukraine. While expectations of a breakthrough remain low, even a limited agreement—such as allowing food exports—could be a small step toward reducing hostilities.

The upcoming joint statement is expected to clarify whether any concrete agreements were reached. For now, the war continues, with both military and diplomatic fronts shaping Ukraine’s uncertain future.
