The Member of Parliament for Butambala County, Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has been arrested and detained by police following renewed incidents of political violence in the district.
According to the Uganda Police Force, Kivumbi has been taken into custody in connection with recent unrest linked to the electoral process in Butambala. Police said the lawmaker is suspected of involvement in activities that allegedly caused chaos at polling stations, prompting security intervention.
Authorities confirmed that Kivumbi remains in police custody and will be arraigned before court in due course.
The arrest comes against the backdrop of deadly violence in Butambala during the election period, where several supporters linked to the opposition were shot dead by security operatives.
Police stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances under which the violence occurred and the role played by political actors.
Hon. Kivumbi, a key figure within the National Unity Platform (NUP) and an ally of party president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has previously condemned the killings and accused security forces of using excessive force against civilians.
The Uganda Police Force said it is handling the matter in accordance with the law and urged political leaders and their supporters to remain calm as investigations continue.
The arrest is likely to heighten political tension in the district, which has been a flashpoint for election-related violence, drawing renewed attention to concerns over security conduct and the protection of civilians during electoral processes.
