Arsenal controlled much of the contest thereafter, patiently probing for a second goal against a disciplined Sunderland side.
That second goal arrived six minutes after Gyokeres was introduced in place of Gabriel Jesus. Despite slipping as he struck the ball, the Swedish forward showed composure to guide his effort into the net. He added his second deep into stoppage time, finishing clinically to remove any doubt about the result.
The win keeps Arsenal top of the table and maintains their momentum at a crucial stage of the season. Elsewhere, Manchester City ensured the title race remains finely balanced with a dramatic 2–1 victory away to Liverpool at Anfield, cutting Arsenal’s cushion at the summit.
Arsenal now face a demanding run of fixtures, including a third consecutive away match in the North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur, who will be without suspended defender Cristian Romero. The Gunners then return to the Emirates in early March to host Chelsea before another tricky away trip to Brighton.
