Ethiopia has taken a major step toward clean energy by banning gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, positioning itself at the forefront of Africa’s transition to electric mobility.

The government is already rolling out electric transport solutions, including over 100 electric buses operating in the capital, Addis Ababa, as part of efforts to modernize public transport and reduce emissions.

Driving this transition is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, which provides renewable energy to support the country’s growing electric vehicle ecosystem.

Authorities have set an ambitious target of reaching 500,000 electric vehicles by 2030, signaling a long-term commitment to sustainable transport and reduced carbon emissions.

Beyond environmental benefits, the move is also expected to cut reliance on imported fuel and strengthen national energy independence.

Analysts say Ethiopia’s approach could serve as a model for other African countries seeking to balance economic growth with climate-conscious development.
