H.E President Y.K Museveni held discussions with the Ambassador of the USA to Uganda, H.E William W. Popp at State House Entebbe.
During the meeting, President Museveni and Ambassador Popp discussed a wide range of topics including the African Growth & Opportunity Act (AGOA) issue.
H.E Museveni also sent a special message to the President of America, H.E Joe Biden. The letter was handed to Ambassador Popp who will deliver it to the US leader.
“H.E President Biden wrote to me about AGOA, so I have answered him. You will deliver the letter to him,” the President said.
On his part, Ambassador Popp reiterated the US government’s commitment to continue cooperating with Uganda through improved bilateral relations.
“We do want to continue conducting business with Uganda as a whole through different projects. These projects could be worked on without any restrictions,” he noted

On his part, Ambassador Popp reiterated the US government’s commitment to continue cooperating with Uganda through improved bilateral relations.

Interestingly, less than 12 hours after the meeting between Museveni and Amb Popp, the U.S. government announced expanded visa restrictions against Ugandan officials suspected of ‘undermining the democratic process’ in the East African country.

This was the third raft of measures against Uganda following the 2021 elections and the enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act.

In response to Washington’s actions, President Museveni recently warned that “some of these actors in the Western World overestimate themselves and underestimate the freedom fighters of Africa.”

Museveni said, “on account of some of the freedom fighters making mistakes of philosophy, ideology and strategy, some of the foreign actors erroneously think that African Countries cannot move forward without their support.”

The President further said “these pressures from outside are joogo (dharau – looking down upon somebody, underrating somebody) towards the Africans and must be rejected. I am told that some of the Arab Countries have similar laws. Why don’t these actors put similar pressures on them
