Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Chairperson of Uganda Electoral Commission has released a comprehensive roadmap for the upcoming 2026 elections. Emphasized the importance of stakeholders using this roadmap to enhance planning and ensure the smooth participation and implementation of electoral activities.
The electoral commission has set specific dates for the nomination of candidates, signaling the official commencement of the electoral process. The nomination of candidates for the presidential elections is scheduled for October 2nd and 3rd, 2025. Aspirants eyeing seats in the Ugandan parliament will go through the nomination process on September 16th and 17th, 2025. Furthermore, the nomination period for candidates vying for positions in Local Governments, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs), will take place from September 3rd to September 12th, 2025.

The polling period for the much-anticipated Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government elections, including SIGs, is set to span from January 12th, 2026, to February 12th, 2026. This timeframe marks a crucial phase in Uganda’s democratic process, where citizens will exercise their right to vote and elect representatives who will shape the nation’s future.

The roadmap presented by the Electoral Commission serves as a comprehensive guide for both electoral authorities and the public. It outlines key dates, allowing stakeholders to plan effectively for various activities leading up to the elections. The importance of adherence to the provided schedule cannot be overstated, as it ensures a transparent, organized, and credible electoral process.

The inclusion of Special Interest Groups in the electoral process highlights Uganda’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and representation. The nomination and subsequent participation of candidates from SIGs underscore the democratic principle of giving voice to diverse segments of the population, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of background, have a stake in the governance of their country.

As Uganda gears up for the 2026 elections, the announcement of key dates by the Electoral Commission sets the stage for a well-organized and participatory democratic process. Stakeholders, including candidates, political parties, and the general public, are urged to familiarize themselves with the roadmap and actively engage in the upcoming electoral activities. The adherence to this schedule will play a pivotal role in upholding the integrity of the elections, fostering inclusivity, and strengthening Uganda’s democratic foundation.
