The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi, today officially opened the nomination process for party candidates vying for the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament seat.

This by-election follows the vacancy left by the late Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who also served as the State Minister for Defence.

The by-election for the Kisoro Woman MP seat is shaping up to be a critical moment for the NRM as it seeks to maintain its political dominance in the region. With five strong candidatesAkifeza Grace Ngabirano, Dushime Sylvia, Igiraneza Winfred Faith, Kabagenyi Rose, and Irankunda Jemimah—competing for the party flag, the internal selection process is under intense scrutiny.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, in his remarks, projected confidence that the NRM would retain the seat, emphasizing that Kisoro has long been a party stronghold. “The people there are entirely yellow, and we don’t expect any serious competition once we front our flag bearer,” he stated. However, the real challenge lies within the NRM’s internal selection process, where the party’s commitment to a free and fair election will be tested.

In a bid to uphold transparency, the NRM Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality, with Dr. Tanga Odoi warning that “no one will be allowed to manipulate the process, not even the party chairman.” This message of integrity reflects ongoing efforts within the party to avoid internal disputes that have marred previous elections.

The focus now shifts to the three-day nomination exercise, with all candidates being urged to present their plans for Kisoro’s future, rather than dwelling on past leadership. Dr. Tanga also warned against divisive or violent tactics, reminding candidates that such behavior could result in disqualification.

With the mourning period for Hon. Nyirabashitsi over, the by-election will serve as a key test of the NRM’s organizational strength and its ability to manage internal competition while retaining its political foothold in Kisoro.
