The Chinese government has committed to donating 3,000 metric tonnes of rice to aid Uganda in addressing the severe hunger crisis in the Karamoja region, which affects over half a million people.

The announcement was made by the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Zhang Lizhong, during a meeting with Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala.

This generous donation underscores the enduring partnership between Uganda and China, offering critical relief to a region grappling with food insecurity caused by harsh climatic conditions, limited water resources, and land degradation. The rice, expected to arrive in December 2024, represents timely support as Karamoja faces a dire need for urgent intervention.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Zhang Lizhong emphasized that the donation reflects China’s solidarity with Uganda during this humanitarian crisis. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable regions like Karamoja.

Prime Minister Nabbanja expressed deep gratitude for the emergency assistance, acknowledging it as a vital lifeline for the affected communities. “This support comes at a critical moment when the people of Karamoja are in desperate need of relief,” she said.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Karamoja Affairs Minister Peter Lokeris, Disaster State Minister Lilian Aber, Minister for Kampala Hajat Minsa Kabanda, and Permanent Secretary Dunstan Balaba. Their presence reinforced the government’s commitment to coordinating efforts to mitigate the crisis.

The rice donation will bolster ongoing efforts to provide immediate food relief while encouraging sustainable solutions to Karamoja’s chronic food challenges. This collaboration between Uganda and China is another testament to their strong historical ties and mutual support in times of need.
