Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among has officially announced her intention to contest for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Vice Chairperson (Female) position, a seat currently held by the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.

Speaking during a media briefing at her Parliament office on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Among clarified her ambitions, dismissing speculation about competing for regional positions.

“You wanted to know whether I am contesting for NRM National Vice Chairperson – Female. I am not standing for the position in Eastern; I am standing for NRM National Vice Chairperson – Female,” she told the press.

Among’s declaration sets the stage for a potential high-stakes contest within the ruling party. The position she seeks has been held by Kadaga, a formidable political figure who fought fiercely to secure it during the last NRM Party elections. Kadaga’s decision on whether she will defend the seat remains unknown, adding intrigue to the upcoming race.

The announcement has already sparked political chatter about the dynamics between the two leaders, both of whom wield significant influence in the NRM. Observers are keen to see how this contest will shape the party’s internal leadership and broader political strategies.

This bid marks yet another milestone in Among’s rising political career. Having previously succeeded Kadaga as Speaker of Parliament, Among’s latest move signals her ambition to consolidate her position within the NRM’s top leadership.

The NRM Vice Chairperson positions are among the most coveted within the party, representing critical roles in shaping its policies and political direction. Among’s declaration is expected to galvanize her supporters and potentially reshape alliances ahead of the next party elections.

As Among throws her hat into the ring, all eyes now turn to Kadaga, whose decision to defend her seat—or not—could set the tone for a potentially contentious race within the ruling party.
