US President Joe Biden is set to visit Italy in January for a three-day trip that could be his final overseas engagement before leaving office.

During his visit, Biden will meet Pope Francis at the Vatican and hold discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella. The trip, scheduled to begin on January 9, was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday.

Biden, a devout Roman Catholic, plans to discuss global peace efforts with the pontiff. In a call accepting the Vatican’s invitation, Biden thanked Pope Francis for his dedication to alleviating global suffering, advocating for human rights, and protecting religious freedoms. The two leaders last met in June 2023, following their initial meeting at the Vatican in 2021.

In addition to his meeting with Pope Francis, Biden will hold talks with Prime Minister Meloni to address critical global challenges. The discussions will include Italy’s leadership as it assumes the G7 presidency, a role that places the country at the center of international cooperation on economic and geopolitical issues.

Biden’s January trip will serve as a key moment to reinforce US-Italy relations and highlight shared efforts on pressing global concerns. The visit reflects his administration’s commitment to fostering strong alliances with international partners, even as his presidency nears its conclusion.

The trip is expected to mark one of Biden’s last significant acts as president, with his term ending on January 20. The visit underscores his emphasis on diplomacy, global peace, and collaboration as he prepares to pass the baton to his successor.
