A tragic incident occurred in Munich in the morning when a car drove into a group of people near the city’s main railway station, resulting in at least 20 injuries, some of which are critical.

The event took place around 10:30 a.m. local time at the intersection of Dachauer Straße and Seidlstraße. Authorities have detained the driver, who is no longer considered a threat.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a damaged Mini Cooper at the scene. One witness recounted that a woman and child were trapped under the vehicle, highlighting the severity of the incident. Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his deep shock, noting that children were among the injured, and extended his thoughts to those affected.

At the time of the incident, members of the German trade union Verdi were holding a rally in the area as part of an ongoing wage dispute. Authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between the demonstration and the incident. A police spokesperson mentioned that officers are examining potential links between the protest and the event.

This incident precedes the heavily secured Munich Security Conference, set to commence on Friday. Senior officials, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, are expected to attend. The location of the incident is approximately 1.5 kilometers from the conference venue, raising concerns about security in the lead-up to the event.

Police have cordoned off the area and are urging the public to avoid the vicinity to facilitate emergency response efforts. They have also requested that witnesses come forward with any information or footage related to the incident.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine the motive behind the incident and whether it was intentional. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

This event has cast a shadow over Munich as it prepares to host international leaders for the security conference. The city’s residents and officials are grappling with the aftermath of the incident while ensuring that upcoming events proceed safely.
