Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Anita Among, met with her Zambian counterpart, Rt Hon. Nelly Butete Kashumba Mutti, on Monday to discuss strengthening collaboration among African legislatures in addressing the continent’s challenges.

Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Anita Among, hosted a delegation from Zambia led by her counterpart, Rt Hon. Nelly Butete Kashumba Mutti, Speaker of the Parliament of Zambia. The discussions centered on deepening parliamentary cooperation to promote peace, stability, and self-reliance across Africa.

A key focus of the meeting was the role of African legislatures in advocating for stability in conflict-affected regions, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Speaker Among emphasized the urgency of a united African approach to addressing the continent’s security and economic challenges.

“Africa must stand together to solve its own problems. We must strengthen our parliamentary networks to advocate for peace and stability rather than relying on foreign assistance. Our unity as legislatures is key to driving change across the continent.”

Speaker Mutti echoed the need for deeper collaboration, stressing that African parliaments must take the lead in shaping policies that promote sustainable development and regional cooperation.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of economic self-sufficiency, with both speakers agreeing that African nations must work together to reduce reliance on external aid and instead harness their own resources for development.

The visit by Speaker Mutti and her delegation marks a step toward strengthening parliamentary diplomacy between Uganda and Zambia, with both sides committing to continued engagement on issues affecting the continent.
