Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a bold entrance into the digital space of former U.S. President Donald Trump, becoming one of the few world leaders to join Truth Social.

His first post featured a 2019 photograph with Trump in Houston, accompanied by a message expressing his delight at being on the platform.

Truth Social, launched in 2022 by Trump following his ban from mainstream social media, has remained a niche platform with a user base significantly smaller than competitors like X (formerly Twitter). Despite its limited reach, Modi’s decision to join raises questions about its strategic and political significance.

At 03:30 GMT, Modi had already gained 21,500 followers, a number likely to grow as his supporters migrate to the platform. His presence underscores the deep ties between the Indian leader and Trump, who has actively shared Modi-related content, including a recent interview with podcaster Lex Fridman.

The move comes at a time when both leaders face crucial political moments—Trump’s attempt to reclaim the White House and Modi’s focus on strengthening his global influence. It also highlights India’s increasingly digital-first approach to diplomacy, leveraging multiple social media platforms to expand its reach.

While Truth Social struggles financially, with reported losses of $400 million in 2024, Modi’s entry could provide a much-needed boost in engagement. However, it remains to be seen whether this is a temporary outreach effort or a long-term shift in Modi’s social media strategy.
