The Vatican has announced the official burial arrangements for Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week, marking the final chapter in the life of a transformative spiritual leader who shepherded the Catholic Church through a complex modern era.

In a solemn statement released Tuesday by the Holy See Press Office, the Vatican detailed the funeral and burial plans for Pope Francis, who will be laid to rest this Saturday. The announcement sets the stage for a historic farewell that will draw millions of faithful from around the globe to honor the late pontiff.

Beginning today, Wednesday, Pope Francis’s body lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, starting at 9 a.m. local time. The procession route leads through Santa Marta Square and the Square of the Roman Protomartyrs, exits via the Arch of the Bells, and enters the basilica through the central door symbolizing the open invitation Pope Francis extended to all during his papacy.

At the Altar of the Confession inside the basilica, Cardinal Kevin Farrell will lead the Liturgy of the Word. Thereafter, members of the public will be welcomed to pay their final respects, a gesture reflecting the inclusive and pastoral legacy Pope Francis leaves behind.

Saturday’s funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square and is expected to draw world leaders, dignitaries, clergy, and millions of Catholics in mourning. Following the service, the pontiff’s body will be moved within St. Peter’s Basilica before making its final journey to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment a church especially dear to Pope Francis throughout his tenure.

The burial ceremony will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and Valedictio, the Church’s final commendation and farewell. This will mark the beginning of the Novemdiales, a traditional nine-day period of prayer and mourning for the pope’s soul.

As Catholics across the world enter this time of solemn reflection, the Vatican prepares for one of its most symbolic and emotional rituals—bidding farewell to a pope who redefined the papacy with humility, compassion, and unwavering advocacy for the marginalized.
