The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba, has confirmed the successful evacuation of 43 Ugandan students from Iran following recent missile strikes between the United States and Iran.
According to the minister, the students who had been stranded in Tehran safely crossed into Turkey as part of an emergency evacuation operation coordinated by Ugandan authorities.
Mulimba stated that the evacuation was facilitated through Uganda’s Defence Advisor in Turkey, Major General Bob Ogiki, shortly after the first strike was reported in Tehran. He noted that the government moved swiftly to ensure the safety of its citizens as tensions escalated in the region.
The development follows heightened hostilities between the United States and Iran, which have triggered security concerns and disrupted normal activities in several Iranian cities. The Ugandan government, through its diplomatic channels, activated contingency plans to secure safe passage for the affected students.
Authorities say efforts are still ongoing to identify and assist other Ugandan nationals who may remain in Iran. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Ugandans in the region to maintain contact with Uganda’s embassies and official representatives for guidance and support.
Government officials reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Ugandan citizens abroad, especially in conflict-prone areas, as regional tensions continue to evolve.
