Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has announced that he has temporarily left Uganda after spending nearly two months out of the public eye following the recent elections.

In a statement, Kyagulanyi, who leads the National Unity Platform, said he went into hiding after security forces allegedly surrounded his home shortly after the polls, prompting him to evade arrest.

The opposition figure said he has now briefly exited the country to meet international partners and allies before returning to continue advocating for democracy and political reforms in Uganda.

Kyagulanyi also announced that Lina Zedriga Waru-Abuku will serve as acting president of the National Unity Platform while he is away.

He thanked supporters who, according to him, helped keep him safe during the period he remained in hiding and urged them to remain united in what he described as the continued struggle for freedom and democratic governance.

Kyagulanyi said he plans to return to the country after completing his engagements abroad to resume his political activities and leadership of the party.
