The Speaker of Parliament and Second National Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement, Anita Annet Among, has welcomed a group of Independent Members of Parliament-elect seeking to enter a cooperation agreement with the ruling party.

The meeting took place at the NRM Secretariat in Nakasero, where discussions focused on aligning the independent legislators with the party’s legislative agenda and broader political direction.

According to Among, MPs who formally express interest in working with the NRM will be invited to attend the upcoming Kyankwanzi Retreat, scheduled for April 7, 2026. The retreat is expected to serve as a platform for officially integrating the independents into the party’s framework.

“During this retreat, we will officially welcome them and formally introduce those who will have signed to work with the party,” Among said.

The move signals a strategic effort by the NRM to consolidate its influence in Parliament by building alliances with independent legislators, a bloc that often plays a decisive role in shaping legislative outcomes.

Political analysts say such cooperation agreements could strengthen party cohesion in the House while also raising questions about the independence of MPs elected outside formal party structures.
