The swearing-in ceremony for Uganda’s 12th Parliament has officially commenced at Parliament House in Kampala, with newly elected legislators taking the Oath of Allegiance and the Parliamentary Oath as required under the Constitution.

The exercise marks the formal beginning of the new parliamentary term and clears Members of Parliament-elect to officially assume office and participate in House proceedings.

Under Article 81(4) of the Constitution, every elected Member of Parliament is required to take and subscribe to the prescribed oaths before sitting or voting in Parliament.

The oaths are being administered by the Clerk to Parliament in accordance with the Rules of Procedure, which govern the transition into a new legislature.

The swearing-in is expected to run over several days to accommodate MPs elected from constituencies across the country, including representatives of political parties, independents, district woman representatives, youth, workers, persons with disabilities, and army representatives.

The commencement of the 12th Parliament comes at a politically significant moment following the recently concluded general elections and ahead of the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

The new Parliament is expected to handle major national issues including budget implementation, economic reforms, governance debates, infrastructure development, and oversight of government programs over the next five years.

Families, supporters, political leaders, and invited guests gathered at Parliament to witness the ceremony, with many lawmakers arriving in ceremonial attire accompanied by relatives and constituents to celebrate the milestone.

The swearing-in process is one of the key constitutional events that formally transitions Uganda from one parliamentary term to another.
