Adrine Katusiime Mwebesa has officially declared her bid for the position of Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, entering what is shaping up to be an increasingly competitive and politically charged contest for the top parliamentary leadership role.

Katusiime announced her candidacy on a platform centered on fighting corruption, restoring public confidence in Parliament, and strengthening institutional accountability.

The Sheema District Woman MP said her campaign would focus on promoting transparency, integrity, and responsible leadership within the House at a time when Parliament continues to face public scrutiny over governance and corruption concerns.

Running on what she described as a strict “zero-tolerance” anti-corruption agenda, Katusiime pledged to help rebuild trust in the institution by ensuring Parliament upholds higher ethical and accountability standards.

Her entry into the race comes amid heightened political maneuvering ahead of the May 25 elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

The contest has already attracted several influential political figures and has been shaped by ongoing negotiations within the ruling National Resistance Movement, regional lobbying efforts, and debates around gender balance and political reform.

Katusiime’s anti-corruption message is also likely to resonate strongly at a time when Parliament and several senior political figures are facing increasing public criticism over allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.

The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will officially mark the beginning of substantive business in Uganda’s 12th Parliament as newly sworn-in lawmakers prepare to begin their five-year term.
