The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) have shared victories in the just-concluded Local Council elections for city division and municipality mayors, underscoring the evolving political contest within the Kampala metropolitan area.

Results compiled by MGD Media show a mixed outcome in Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), where voters distributed leadership across party lines in the city’s five divisions.

In Kampala Central Division, NRM’s Salim Saad Uhuru emerged victorious, retaining the party’s foothold in the heart of the capital. The opposition NUP, however, made significant inroads elsewhere, winning three divisions.

Nakawa Division was taken by NUP’s Ali Buken, popularly known as Nubian Li, while Kawempe Division elected Dr. Emmanuel Sserunjoji on the same ticket. Lubaga Division also fell to NUP after Mberaze Mawula Zacchy secured the mayoral seat.

Makindye Division delivered a different outcome after NRM’s Yasin Omar was declared winner unopposed. The Electoral Commission disqualified 11 other aspirants in the race for failing to meet the required number of supporting signatures, leaving Omar as the sole candidate.

In neighboring Wakiso District, the NRM largely dominated the municipality mayoral contests, tightening its grip on key urban centers surrounding the capital. Fabrice Rulinda won the Entebbe Municipality mayoral race, Allan Bulamu clinched victory in Kira Municipality, and Bosco Galabuzi secured the seat in Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, all on the NRM ticket.

NUP registered a notable breakthrough in Wakiso when John Bosco Sserunkuma, popularly known as Kaana Ka Mbaata, won the Nansana Municipality mayoral race, giving the opposition a strategic urban victory in the district.

The results highlight sustained political competition between NRM and NUP in the greater Kampala area, with voters continuing to split their support between the ruling party and the opposition.
