Algeria has declared three days of national mourning following the death of former President Liamine Zeroual, who passed away at the age of 84.

Zeroual, who led the country from 1994 to 1999, died in a military hospital in Algiers after a prolonged illness. His leadership came at a critical time in Algeria’s history, as the nation faced political instability and internal conflict.

He is widely remembered for steering the country through a turbulent period and for overseeing Algeria’s first multi-party presidential elections in 1995, a significant step toward political reform.

In tribute to his legacy, authorities have ordered flags to fly at half-mast across the country, as citizens and leaders reflect on his contribution to national unity and stability.
