Parliament’s Appointments Committee has approved Juma Witonze Kisekka for appointment as State Minister for Internal Affairs, paving the way for his formal assumption of office.

Witonze replaces Dr. Lawrence Muganga, the Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, whose nomination for the same position was not approved.

The committee, chaired by Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth and deputised by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, vetted Witonze during a closed-door sitting held on Thursday.

During the vetting, Witonze pledged to prioritise the fight against corruption within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, saying he would work to strengthen accountability across all departments under the ministry.

Responding to concerns raised about allegations of torture and recent abduction cases, Witonze said he would first familiarise himself with the facts and operations of the ministry before determining the appropriate course of action.

Several members of the Appointments Committee welcomed his nomination, describing him as a hardworking, trustworthy and committed leader capable of serving in the docket.

With the committee’s approval, Witonze now awaits formal appointment and swearing-in to officially assume his duties as State Minister for Internal Affairs.
