State Minister for Fisheries Robert Migadde Ndugwa has urged voters in Kalangala District to elect NRM flag bearer Idah Nabayiga as Woman Member of Parliament, describing her as the most suitable candidate to advance the interests of the district’s fishing communities.

Speaking to journalists during campaign activities in Kalangala, Migadde said Nabayiga possesses the experience, knowledge, and commitment needed to address the unique challenges facing island residents whose livelihoods largely depend on fishing.

According to the minister, Kalangala requires a representative who understands the fisheries sector and can effectively advocate for fishermen and fishing communities at the national level.

“I worked with Nabayiga in the 10th Parliament and I know her record. She understands fisheries issues and has always been passionate about matters affecting fishing communities,” Migadde said.

The minister revealed that during his tenure as chairperson of the Parliamentary Forum on Fisheries, he closely interacted with Nabayiga and witnessed her commitment to promoting the welfare of island communities and people engaged in the fishing industry.

Migadde noted that Kalangala continues to face challenges ranging from access to services and infrastructure to issues affecting fisheries management, requiring leaders who understand local realities and can effectively lobby government for support.

“She comes from here and has lived through the challenges faced by our island communities. She understands the concerns of fishermen and knows what needs to be done to address them,” he added.

The minister further argued that Nabayiga’s affiliation with the ruling National Resistance Movement would place her in a stronger position to engage government and influence decisions affecting the district.

“The government in power is the NRM government and it will remain in office until 2031. Kalangala needs a representative who can work closely with government and be part of discussions where decisions affecting communities are made,” Migadde said.

He also thanked President Yoweri Museveni for prioritizing the fisheries sector and appointing leadership focused on addressing the needs of fishing communities across the country.

However, Migadde emphasized that ministerial interventions alone are insufficient without legislators who understand sector-specific concerns and can champion them in Parliament.

His remarks come as senior NRM leaders intensify campaigns ahead of the June 24 Kalangala District Woman MP by-election, with the ruling party seeking to strengthen its political presence in the island district.

Migadde also commended residents for their enthusiasm and support despite the logistical challenges associated with mobilizing communities scattered across numerous islands on Lake Victoria.

“Kalangala is a special area because mobilisation is not easy. The lake can be rough, but we have a duty to deliver victory and ensure the district gets effective representation,” he said.
