The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially launched campaigns for the 2026 Village (LC I) Chairperson and Village Women Committee elections, urging candidates and their supporters to conduct peaceful, disciplined and issue-based campaigns ahead of polling.

Speaking on Monday, Electoral Commission Spokesperson and Head of Public Relations Julius Mucunguzi said the campaign period gives candidates an opportunity to present their manifestos and engage voters while strictly observing the electoral laws and guidelines governing the exercise.

According to the Electoral Commission, candidates contesting for Village Women Committee positions will campaign from July 20 to July 22, with voting scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2026. Campaign activities will be conducted between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. each day.

Meanwhile, campaigns for candidates seeking election as Village (LC I) Chairpersons will continue until Monday, July 27, ahead of polling on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

“The Electoral Commission informs the general public that campaigns by all those contesting for positions of LC I Chairpersons, as well as women contesting for Women Committees, start today, Monday, July 20, 2026,” Mucunguzi said.

He called upon candidates, campaign teams, voters and other stakeholders to maintain peace, tolerance and mutual respect throughout the campaign period, emphasizing that all campaign activities must comply with electoral laws and directives issued by Electoral Commission officials at village, parish, sub-county and district levels.

Mucunguzi also warned candidates against holding campaign activities in areas that could disrupt essential public services or interfere with normal community activities. He urged all participants to avoid actions that could create tension or violence, saying the elections should strengthen democracy and promote unity at the grassroots.

The Electoral Commission appealed to Ugandans to participate responsibly and allow citizens to freely elect leaders of their choice.

The LC I Chairperson and Village Women Committee elections form a vital part of Uganda’s local governance system, with elected leaders playing a key role in grassroots mobilisation, community conflict resolution and the implementation of local development programmes.
