South Sudan President Salva Kiir has announced that the country’s December 22, 2026 general elections will usher in a leaner government, marking the end of the transitional governance structure established under the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.
Kiir said the current arrangement, which includes five vice presidents and 650 members of parliament, will be significantly reduced after the elections as part of efforts to streamline government operations and cut public expenditure.
According to the President, a smaller government will enable the country to save resources that can instead be invested in key development priorities, including public services and infrastructure.
The planned reforms are expected to take effect following South Sudan’s first post-transition elections, which are anticipated to mark a new phase in the country’s political transition after years of implementing the 2018 peace deal.
Kiir expressed confidence that the restructuring would improve government efficiency while supporting the country’s long-term development and stability.
