The Permanent Secretary of the Judiciary of Uganda, Pius Bigirimana, has urged individuals who made bail and security deposit payments to come forward and file claims to recover their money.
The call follows concerns raised by Members of Parliament on the Public Accounts Committee that more than Shs54 billion in bail and security deposits is currently lying unclaimed in Judiciary accounts.
Bigirimana made the remarks while appearing before the committee on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, where lawmakers questioned the Judiciary over the large sums of money that have remained idle for years without being reclaimed by their rightful owners.
He explained that many individuals who deposit bail or security funds often fail to follow up on the process required to claim their money once court proceedings are concluded.
To address the issue, Bigirimana revealed that the Judiciary has established a special committee tasked with reviewing the records and expediting the process of verifying and releasing the funds to eligible claimants.
The committee will also work on streamlining procedures to ensure that people who deposited bail or security funds are properly guided on how to reclaim them after the completion of their cases.
Members of Parliament on the committee emphasized the need for improved record management and public awareness to ensure that the large sums of money held by the Judiciary are returned to their rightful owners in a timely manner.
